Using static passwords to access IT networks and buildings has great disadvantages. On the one hand, they become ever more complex and correspondingly difficult to manage. On the other hand, they run the particular risk of being stolen and misused for criminal purposes. They can also lead to forgotten passwords, with the ensuing support costs. Strong authentication and one-time passwords (OTP) can alleviate these security risks.

Strong authentication means that to access a system, you need to physically have a smartcard or a token in your possession and know the password. Multi-factor authentication adds a third factor, for example characteristic physical traits of the user, like a fingerprint.
