An integrated system solution

The issuing of electronic personal identification documents is an extremely complicated process: from the development of the card material and security features, through the operating systems, applications, and cryptographic mechanisms, the data acquisition in registration offices, and the secure data transmission, all the way to the personalization of the documents. For all these processes G&D can provide its customers with the experience and expertise of an internationally successful consulting service provider, with an integrated system solution for every performance module.

Card material

ID cards are subjected to many kinds of stress, which is why they need to be as durable as possible in order to resist physical tampering, external influences and wear, chemicals, temperature fluctuations, environmental conditions, and UV radiation.

Because the lifetime internationally demanded of ID cards can be up to ten years, G&D bases its choice of card body material on the very highest quality standards. Combined with the appropriate personalization technology, maximum counterfeit protection and durability can be guaranteed.

In selecting the card material, G&D matches the requirements and interests of its clients and project partners to the letter, although we do recommend the use of polycarbonate (PC). All of G&D’s cards meet international standards.

Security technologies

When designing ID cards, G&D is able to draw on years of experience in the development and integration of security features. A variety of different security printing technologies and other security features are employed in the production of identity documents, which combine to form a smart overall concept.

Card operating systems and applications

We offer a variety of implementations for operating systems – based entirely on customer requirements. G&D’s portfolio of operating systems covers the entire spectrum of international security standards and certifications. The applications based on the operating systems are standardized solutions, but they are also customized – according to requirements.

G&D offers two types of operating system which have constituted the leading systems with regard to security for the last few decades and meet all international standards:

• STARCOS as native operating system (meets ISO7816)
• Sm@rtCafé Expert as open, standardized JavaCard operating system

Actively involved

G&D has been actively involved in developing standards and guidelines (e.g. ISO/IEC, CEN, DIN, ICAO) for many years and plays a leading role in national and international industry forums. Our products are regularly tested and assessed by the major evaluation and certification bodies.

Security evaluation agencies include Eclipse, FOGRA, NIST for FIPS certification, and the BSI for “Common Criteria Certification”.

G&D has proved the conformity and security of these cards in numerous composite security evaluations to “Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluation” (ISO 15408) or FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard).
